The Jason Spencer Sports Ground

Sports ground named in memory of Jason

By Caroline Lowbridge

THE mother of a murdered teenager says she is "really touched" that a new sports ground will be named in her son's memory.

Angela Spencer will open the Jason Spencer Sports Ground on Friday, June 3, 2011.

The date is special for Angela and her family as it would have been Jason's 22nd birthday.

The sports ground, off Valley Road, includes a multi-use games area, where people can play basketball, a sport Jason loved to play.

Young people from Sherwood, including Jason's friend Vicky Cowie, worked with Nottingham
City Council to get the sports ground built.

They helped to raise £60,000 towards the total cost of £95,000 through fundraising events including a sponsored stay-awake and supermarket bag-packing. They also applied for grants.

The design work was carried out by Groundwork Greater Nottingham.

Angela said: "I think it's a really nice gesture, not only from Vicky, but the whole group. It's really special. I hope people will come down and show their support. It sounds like it's going to be a fun day."

Angela will cut the ribbon at 6pm, but activities are planned from 5.30pm to 7pm, including football and basketball.

Jason's stepfather John Greensmith said Jason would have loved to use the sports ground.

He said: "He used to travel around looking for places where he could play basketball, and there weren't many. He would have lived here. Basketball was his sport."

Vicky, 20, said: "It's for everyone to use. Hopefully it will lower crime. If it helps to keep people out of trouble then it's definitely worth it."

Angela and John said they would like to thank Vicky, all the young people in Sherwood, neighbourhood action officer Peter Maxfield and youth worker Surinder Kainth.
